Help help help. How does one deal with an organisation that is totally self serving on do it but wants help promoting in the local area threough other means?
We need details of the org and opp on VBase Cloud for drop ins and other forms of promotion as it is our only database but wew don't want to upload to do it. We can control the upload of the opp to do it by keeping as a draft but cannot control the upload of the org to do it. In the past we have managed the situation by creating "local" versions of the org and creating draft opps but increasingly orgs are becoming frustrated by the large number of "versions" of their orgs and asking us to remove and consolidate. I thought therefore that today I should ask the org in question to make us an administrator on the account so that we could create a draft opp for our own use. They were happy for this and lo and behold the org has appeared on Vbase together with 12 opps all out of our area!!!! To add insult to injury the one opp that is in our area isn't among the 12 we can see on VBase Cloud although on Do it the org has 32 opps and certainly on do it the one I am interested in appears as my opp and I can edit and do anything I like with it even though it was created and uploaded by the org themselves
For the benefit of the Veda Help Team the org concerned is Wessex Cancer Trust and the opp we want to see but can't is Befriender - Chandler's Ford Cancer Support Centre. I experimented and edited it on do it and changed it to be Offered/listed by us instead of the org but it still didn't show on VBC. I have since changed it back because I don't think I should interfere with opps that the org is administering themselves.
I am tearing my hair out. All I want to do is record details of an org and an opp in my area so that I can promote it locally, but how? All I have succeded in doing now is getting the details of the org in VBC, yes that's a ticked box, but my databse is now cluttered up with another 12 out of area opps that I don't want to know about and the one opp I do want to know about still eludes me.
How are other VCs handling this? Is it a VBC or a Do It problem and how do we get it solved. I am coming to the conclusion that if you are an administrator on an account then ALL its opps become yours regardless of where they are. This is why sharing orgs doesn't work. And yet creating "local" orgs as eventaully recommended by do it is upsetting some of the parent orgs.
I am going to submit this as on the do it forum and as a request for support as well as I'll be interested to see what Do it and non VBC users say.
Unfortunately it seems that this whole idea of national organisations on Do-it doesn't work. There are just so many reports of these problems on both this forum and the do-it forum.
I'm afraid we have to say to these organisations that we are happy to promote their opportunities using a local version of their organisation. If they want a single organisation - then I'm afraid we can't help. In the main we have found that large organisation accept this and still work "in the old way". We just don't have the time to handle all the problems associated with changing the way we operate in this respect.
For years voluntary organisations large and small have benefited from the brokerage services provided by the network of Volunteer Centres. Since new Do-it came on the scene it appears that brokerage for national organisations is largely broken - very sad.
Hi,
The design of the website tries to consider that the precense of an organisation could be unified to one page, with many contributers. This does mean that you'll see the opportunities if you're an administrator which can be frustrating, though for the volunteer I'd expect this is a better option rather than fragmentation. V-Base is pretty flexible though, so consider the following:
Could we get a consensus on the forum that users could benefit from the following?
-Ability within V-Base to not upload org/opp information to Do-it.org (to aid local promotion)
-Ability within V-Base to hide opportunities (for recruiter's ability to organise effectively)
Also I think changing by/for information in Do-it won't reflect in V-Base with a delay of up to 2 hours, which might have caused you trouble. (Orgs/Opps are updated at lower frequency for site stability though registrations of interest are updated quickly.)

Thank you Chris
I think both of these suggestions are excellent and we would welcome them both as enhancements
both enhancements would be very welcome by us
many thanks
Yes, this would be excellent. We are looking at ways to use Vbase to log support for local groups, may of whom will never recruit volunteers, so the option not the put them online would be extremely helpful.
Ditto - both features are needed. We have several organisations which have specifically requested not to be on the do-it website.
I agree with Richard's (rtomalin's) comment re ...for years voluntary organisations large and small have benefited from the brokerage services provided by the network of Volunteer Centres...
Unfortunately, do-it website appears to have been created for organisations recruiting directly for themselves, and brokers such as Volunteer Centres don't appear to have been considered seriously until recently. We are doing our best to continue offering a service to all volunteer-involving organisations but have to accept we can't do everything as well as we could before.
Both features would be very welcome
